Earlier this month, the Young Catholic Men’s Conference provided an excellent occasion for fellowship and faithful reflection. A powerhouse lineup of Catholic speakers, including a number of young, diocesan priests, Bishop Perez, and Chris Padgett, the keynote speaker, were in attendance.

The day of the conference was characterized by a relaxed cadence, where young men moved from general sessions to smaller break-out groups, interspersed with time for recreation and competition. While the young men were in small groups, the fathers and adult role models witnessed talks on authentic masculine leadership. While there were plenty of opportunities for prayer, such as through the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist, the schedule of events was social by design and fostered a familial environment.

Benedictine had six young men represent itself at this conference: Ulysses Altizer, Dominic Forniti, Andrew Joyce, Nick Lee, Jared Murray, and Stephen Zachlin. All responded positively about the day. Ulysses captured the overall sense well by stating,”The retreat opened my eyes as a young man of Benedictine, while also showing me what it means to be a man of God. We were taught how to weigh the options, understand who you truly are, and my favorite part, how to respectfully treat women and maintain a solid relationship.”For his own part, Jared “thought the retreat was very enjoyable” and┬áprovided a good chance “to get away and really focus on God.” He also recommended that this retreat experience be more widely marketed to the student body in the future so that more students can benefit in mind, body, and spirit. Dominic echoed this sentiment, commenting that, “The retreat was an interesting experience. The speakers were good and funny. Some of the things it taught me was to trust God and to be a better person.

Ultimately, the first ever YCMC seemed to be a smashing success in presenting the Gospel message to young men in a resounding way, and we hope to see this conference back next year!
